Lower Deschutes River Fishing Report: Bench Fire Update

The containment numbers have drastically improved over the last 48 hours. Here is the direct breakdown of the percentages and what the next two weeks look like for the area:

Current Numbers (As of August 1, 2026)

• Containment: 46% contained.
• Total Size: 67,229 acres.
• The Big Win: Because the eastern and northern lines holding the town of Warm Springs are so secure, the Oregon State Fire Marshal structural teams are officially demobilizing tonight. The immediate threat to homes and town infrastructure has successfully been defused.

What to Expect Over the Next Two Weeks

While the town and the Highway 26 corridor are out of the crosshairs, the incident is transitioning into a long-game wildland operation. Here is what to anticipate:

1. A Tough Weekend of Active Burning (Out West)

A Red Flag Warning is active today due to high temperatures, low humidity, and wind gusts hitting 30 mph. The fire is expected to push aggressively along the western perimeter near the Metolius River and down toward the rugged terrain of the timberline. You will likely see significant smoke columns rising to the west/southwest over the next few days as the interior and timbered sections catch.

2. Deep Mop-Up & “Black Lines” on the East Side

Over the next 7 to 14 days, wildland crews will be doing heavy grunt work close to where you were driving. Expect to see crews continuing to patrol, clear hot spots, and deepen the buffer lines (“mopping up”) along the eastern flanks to make sure a rogue ember doesn’t cross back over US-26 or push toward the Deschutes.

3. Shifting Smoke Patterns

For the next two weeks, air quality will be entirely dependent on daily wind shifts. When the standard afternoon winds kick up out of the northwest, they will push smoke from the active western edge straight down into the Lower Deschutes canyon and toward Lake Billy Chinook. Expect intermittent smoky afternoons alternating with clear mornings.

4. Heavy Fire Traffic & Resource Shifts

Even though the structural trucks are leaving town, over 1,000 wildland personnel remain on the line. You will continue to see heavy agency traffic on local roads, and aircraft will stay busy dipping out of Lake Billy Chinook to douse the western ridges.

The Bottom Line: The threat of the fire sweeping through Warm Springs proper is mostly behind us. The next two weeks will be about wildland firefighters wrestling the western edge into submission in steep country while the east side transitions into a fully controlled, cold perimeter.

The Eyewitness Report

If you drive through the Warm Springs town center or pull up to the Warm Springs boat ramp, you’ll find a massive sigh of relief. Visually, there is virtually no active fire sweeping the immediate river corridor right there. The intense threat to the immediate community and structural areas has dropped significantly. 

Angler Outlook & River Conditions

The skies are now starting to clear on the Lower Deschutes, and with the Warm Springs boat ramp expected to reopen soon, it’s a prime time to be on the water. Both native Redband trout are active in the clear, colder water, which is currently hovering between fifty six and fifty seven degrees. You’ll find thick caddis hatches present, along with small PMDs and PEDs in the morning, and the October caddis nymphs are also active, making it a good time to nymph with your favorite October caddis pattern, small stone fly patterns are good too.

Looking ahead to mid August, we’re looking at the potential for a cooler fall season, and overnight camp trips are a great way to experience a ton of water to fish without the full commitment of a longer 2-3 night stay making them perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or those who just want a shorter adventure.
